Congratulations to William G. Kaelin Jr, Peter J. Ratcliffe, and Gregg L. Semenza for winning the 2019 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology. In 2016, the trio was honored with the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award for their discovery of the pathway by which cells from humans and most animals sense and adapt to changes in oxygen availability – a process essential for survival.
